It'll be a blue Christmas for me if I see painted pointsettias at the garden centers this year. I was really hoping that this would be a passing fad, but I fear it's here to stay. I just saw my first purple pointsettia on flkr.
I guess if you're one of those people who like to have a color-coordinated tree and decorations, it's a godsend to have your pointsettia in the same color scheme. Call me old fashioned, but isn't the Christmas color scheme already set as red and green?

Bee Movie and the Waggle Dance
I was just watching the trailer for Jerry Seinfeld's "Bee Movie" at Beemovie.com.
I'm on a self-imposed boycott of cartoons right now, since I'm probably going to have my fill soon as Nelumbo Jr. gets interested in movies, but I might have to go see this one. OK, it's a little silly that a bee is having an existential crisis, but it looks funny.
In a world that is largely insect-phobic, why do we love bees so much? Because bumblebees are furry and cute? Because honeybees provide us with honey? Because they are "social" insects with intricate communication skills?
When Nelumbo Jr. gets older, I will have to teach her the "waggle dance". Bees communicate where the best flowers are by doing a little figure eight dance, and the straight portion of the dance is in the direction of the flowers. So you can make a fun and somewhat educational game for kids by having one child hide some candy and then do the waggle dance to show the others the location of the candy.
But I guess she will have to start walking before she can dance!

I was a tree!
I gave my students a good laugh and dressed up as a tree yesterday. I wore all brown and pinned fake ivy crawling up my leg. Then I attached some leaves to a hat and I was ready to go.
Next year I will have to do something creative with Nelumbo Jr. She was a little young this year, but next year she might be ready for the trick or treat festivities. I really like the idea of the flower costume, Annie in Austin, so I might try it next year! Or maybe she can be a sapling, and I'll be the mother tree.
